This week was our first week of semester two, I felt like did a lot for the first week. Probably one of my favorite part of the week was doing a food challenging. In this challenge we had to make a four serving meal for only five dollars. We got to go to Vons and Trader Joes to see where the prices were cheaper. We made avocado toast with hard boiled egg and tomatoes. We bought the eggs at Vons and we bought all the the other ingredients (avocado, bread, and tomatoes) at Trader Joe's. After buying all the ingredients we spent around 4.31 dollars. Once we got back to school we started to boil up some water. We dropped three eggs in the water right before it started to boil. Before we boiled the water we seasoned it with salt. Boiling three eggs took around 4-5 mins, They were perfectly cooked. Once the eggs were done I put them in cold water so they could chill. Once there chilled we sliced them so they can be placed on top of the avocado bread. Because of our five dollar budget we could only buy two avocados, so we ran out pretty quickly. I though I did really well on time and making the toast. It was very fun and difficult at the same time. I could really grow on letting my team mates help a little more than they did. They didnt really feel that interested in cooking the food that we made. I could've ask them more on what they wanted to make. Over all this was a great intro to project and I can't wait for the weeks to come.
MUN - Zombie Sim
The MUN Zombie Sim was probably my most favorite day in class yet! We were grouped up with another student and were chosen a country. I was partnered with Elias and we were Russia. The main goal for this simulation was too figure out the main problems of Russia in a zombie situation. Russia has problems with educating the people about health and infections. Also many people are sick there, so they need to be treated well. The next goal is too be allies with other country's. Russia was very convincing to many other country's. We convinced the other countries by giving them doctors and nurses because 5% of our country's population is doctors and nurses. At the end of the discussion I got everybody on my side. I got all the country's including China, Indonesia, Zambia, India, and Swiss. The only country's that Russia didn't get was the U.s. and Brazil. We were fighting against the U.S to get all the countries. Overall this was such a fun day and will probably be the bets day of the year. I hope we do this a lot more!!!
Week 3
This week in class we had too read a bunch a different articles and right a summary on each paragraph. We had around 5-6 pages of information on human rights, duties, Gmo's, Biofuels, Corn, and Money. I think it was a bit much to read in one sitting. I thought it was boring and not really interesting. After reading these articles we had to make a poster about human rights. I had the article talking about the difference between Duties vs Human Rights. We had to make a poster explaining the difference between duties and human rights. We made a poster with a police man holding two signs. One sign saying duties and the other saying human rights. Over all this mini project was a little difficult to do because we had some hard articles. It was really hard to get the meaning out of it.
Week 4
Our class had another MUN simulation, it was about how to stop food hunger. We've been researching and discussing all about our country which has been a very difficult. I had China witch is a dictatorship and won't help to stop food hunger around the world. So everybody was against us and nobody wanted to join our plan. The main reason why is because we didn't donate to the UN. The US donates .7% of there GDP to the UN. China does not donate at all, but they do have a billion dollar fund to help hunger. Which we talked about a lot. We got one country with us and it was the DR of Congo. We gave them money and in return they gave us minerals to help in technology. So it was a good trade. The DR of Congo is sort of a 3 world country, and had a lot of human labor instead of animals and technology. So we helped them buy giving them money to get more people out of hard labor jobs and using animals instead. I wished I was able to research more about China because I think I could've gotten more people on my side. But overall it was a very fun day, I really enjoy doing this types of things and hope I will do good on the final one.
week 5 (03/03/17)
This week we went on a field trip to Ocean Beach farmers market. We had to observe and interview the venders selling food there. It was very crowded and hard to walk. Sometimes it smelled good and sometimes it smelled horrible. Overall it was pretty fun I was able to buy some boba which was killer. Plus I learned a lot about how to run a company. Our requirement was to interview 3 venders and 3 customers. We asked a few questions such as, How do you price things?, How did you decide on what to sell?, and Why OBFM?
I learned a lot about selling items very easily and quickly. Most vendors said to be very polite and offer people samples. Also to engage in there conversations and answer all there questions. I also learned how to price our items. You always have to mark up the price by 30% so you can gain a profit and still be able to buy more ingredients.
week 6 (3/10/17)
This was a very laid back week even though we had a lot of work to do for High Tech High standards. The school had two half days this week, which we never have. Everybody was excited for that. The first three days were normal days, which seemed to last for ever! During those first three days we had to write a paper about a article we annotated. The article talked about how people see food as food not a plant or animal, also how corn is more of a product than a plant. I thought my reading log was very successful, I felt like I did well for my first one ever. The article was a decent amount of reading for me, plus it wasn't that interesting to me either. The arctile connected to our project because our project is about food and how we can make it affordable. Anyways overall this week was fun and very laid back, so that was great!
Week 7 (3/17/17)
This week we had a lot of work time. Tuesday thru thursday we had all project work time in the afternoon it was great. My group got a lot done in those three days. We got to figure out our ingredients our pricing and our logo. We are making flavored drinks made out of ice cubes, we are going to have two drinks ice coffee and a deconstructed lemonade. The flavor will be in the ice cubes, so when the ice cubes melt you get more flavor. Our company name is called "ice-breakers," I know its not the greatest but it works. The pricing will be around 5 dollars for a drink, because we are using some sort of mason jar and high end coffee and ingredients.
Seminar - (3/24/17)
This week we had a seminar about non browning apples. Matt was not in the seminar this time, so I became the leader of the seminar. It was very hard to get my other classmates to talk and get engaged. But it was pretty cool to lead, I felt like I was in control and every body listened to me. I couldn't really think of any questions to get my classmates to engage and have more than a one sentence conversation. We had a good seminar overall though, we got to talk a lot about our opinions on GMO's and how gmos are good or bad. I'm on the fence on gmo's, they made food cheap and taste awesome! But we don't know if its bad for you or if its fine, Because of it being a new thing we dont know the long term risks or effects. Over all it was a fun seminar and a great last day with senor Matt.
